Texas School Ready

The Sam Houston State University/ Texas School Ready! Project (SHSU/TSR!) serves at-risk preschool-aged children. The purpose of Sam Houston State University/Texas School Read! Project is to increase children's school readiness through five evidence-driven components:

  • research-based curriculum
  • technology-driven child progress monitoring
  • facilitated teacher professional development
  • ongoing teacher mentoring
  • sustainability

Now in its eighth year, Sam Houston State University/Texas School Ready! (SHSU/TSR!) has grown from serving 15 classrooms in and around the Huntsville area to serving 60 preschool classrooms located within a 50 mile radius of Sam Houston State University.  Each classroom remains in the project for a total of 3 years and is supported to establish a sustainability plan for continued implementation of quality early childhood practices once their participation years have expired.

Teachers participating in the SHSU/TSR! Project receive over 100 hours of professional development in the first two years of participation.  Additionally, graduate-level, trained coaches work with the teacher in the classroom for 40+ hours each year.

To support the teaching and planning of quality early childhood experiences, each classroom receives a state adopted preschool curriculum and minipulatives.  The impact over time has provided quality programs to approximately 6,000 kindergarten-bound preschoolers.  Evidence from early childhood education professionals who implement Texas School Ready! in their classrooms reveals that young children most at-risk are better prepared to succeed in kindergarten.
