Submission Guidelines

The theme for the June 2018 publication is: Literacy in A Social Justice Era
Please submit all manuscripts by April 30, 2018.

The theme for the December 2018 publication is: Working Toward Transformation and Change in Literacy Education
Please submit all manuscripts by October 1, 2018.

Manuscripts are currently solicited for publication


Who should submit manuscripts?

Submissions are open to all literacy professionals (i.e. professors, students, K-12 administrators, and K-12 educators).


What Type of Manuscripts are Accepted?

  • Full Length Articles
    These articles should deal with research, current issues, and recent trends. Appropriate topics include: struggling or skilled readers, reading and writing across the curriculum, assessment, international literacy, popular culture, digital literacy, culturally responsive teaching, English language learners, and/or disabilities. Academic articles should not exceed 10,000 words, including an abstract of 150-200 words, a list of 5 key words pertaining to the manuscript, tables, figures, and references.
  • Manuscripts for the Transforming Lives Through Young Adult Literature Column
    Articles for this column should describe teaching ideas and strategies that can be implemented in the classroom. Articles for this column should not exceed 2500 words including references.
  • Book and Resource Reviews
    Reviews should describe and critique children’s books, professional books, or reading resources that are appropriate for classroom teachers and literacy professionals. Reviews should not exceed 1000 words.

The editor requests articles that are grounded in current theory and research that address levels from elementary to higher education.


Manuscript Guidelines

  • Manuscripts should be submitted electronically in Microsoft Word or .RTF, double-spaced, and the format should conform to the guidelines presented in the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (6th Ed.).
  • In your letter of introduction and confirmation, please provide a statement indicating that the manuscript has not been submitted elsewhere.
  • List your name, address, school affiliation, telephone number, and e-mail address on the title page only, not on the manuscript. Receipt of manuscripts will be acknowledged by e-mail.
  • Submit a statement indicating that the research has been approved by the University’s IRB.

All manuscripts will undergo a blind review by at least two members of the editorial board. Decisions on the acceptance of manuscripts will be made within 6-8 weeks after the submission deadline. Only electronic submissions will be accepted.

All accepted manuscripts will receive proofs before publication.
