Welcome to the College of Humanities and Social Sciences.

Our disciplines are the fundamental building blocks at the center of all education. By studying history, political science, language, communication, culture and other human influences, students are better able to understand the world around them and their place in it, no matter what career path they may take.

Faculty in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences have been recognized for their teaching excellence and scholarly achievements at local, regional, state, national and international levels. Courses in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences exceed the national norms in teacher effectiveness and course excellence. The colleges  ‘Ethics, Western Civilization and American Traditions’ (EWCAT) classes offer an innovative approach to core classes in the undergraduate curriculum designed to enhance critical thinking and research skills.

FowardGraduating Seniors Overcome Adversity to Cross the Stage

In times of hardship it is easy to give up, but strength lies in the ability to be resilient and stay focused. This is the case for three Sam Houston State University graduating seniors, who maintain that the best way to make it through is to just keep going.

Chelsie Scott, Mayra Soto-Hauser, and Jeramy Cannon are all great examples of what it means to be resilient in the face of adversity. They each have faced difficult times due to their status as former foster  youth or homeless students, but nevertheless persisted and have made it to graduation.

New Creative Space to Inspire Innovation in CHSSIris Lab

The Iris Technical Communication Suite officially opened its doors to the Sam Houston State University community on Thursday, April 12 with a ribbon cutting ceremony and open house. This long-awaited creative space, located in the Evans Complex room 251, quietly opened in the fall of 2017, but was not fully operational until now.

The intent was to build a space that is not like the typical computer lab filled with rows of computers, but is more of a production environment. Outfitted with a 3D printer, sound booth, a video editing station, audio recording equipment, a photography station and Adobe Creative Suite installed on all of the computers, it possesses the necessary tools to foster student innovation and creativity.

German FellowshipSenior Selected for Prestigious Year-Long German Fellowship

Sam Houston State University senior Evan Hannon has always evaluated his life choices through a long-term lens. He took a special interest in German culture after his first language course in high school and made a commitment to himself to one day visit the country.

Five years later, he is one of 75 American students chosen to participate in the 2018-19 Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange for Young Professionals, a year-long U.S. Department of State-funded fellowship for study and work in Germany.

Communication Studies Students Present Research in Nashville Comm Students

Two Communication Studies students recently presented research they conducted in their Qualitative Communication Research class at the Southern States Communication Association convention in Nashville, TN. Emilia Rogers and Kyanna Washington had their papers selected for the Undergraduate Honors Conference out of 134 papers submitted from the Southeast U.S. region.

Chance Young, a co-author with Emilia Rogers, also attended the conference. Both papers also were selected as Top Five Papers for the conference. The UHC has been held within the SSCA convention for over 25 years to attract the top undergraduate communication students across the Southeastern U.S.
