Faculty Moderator Guidelines:

The primary purpose of the Undergraduate Research Symposium is to give students a chance to present their research in a professional environment. For most students, this is a first-time experience, and so the primary responsibility for the faculty moderator is to give presenters constructive feedback on what they are doing well and what they can improve upon.

Since we cannot always match faculty with sessions that are in their fields of specialization (our goal is to put you in a session within your college), the evaluations primarily focus on the presentations themselves (rather than on content), and you will be given moderator forms the day of the symposium (a sample is here). The feedback should be constructive (but given kindly and informally). Of course you are invited to address the content of presentations as well, and space is provided on the form for that purpose.

NB: Moderator forms should be given to presenters after their sessions are over. While you are welcome to ask questions during the question-and-answer period, please do not critique the students at that time. If you are unable to give the student his/her form, just turn it in at the registration desk.

If you have any questions, e-mail Kimberly Bell (kbell@shsu.edu) or call the Honors College office (936-294-1477).
