Program Mission, Goals, and Objectives

The didactic program in dietetics at Sam Houston State University is: an inclusive program whose mission is to provide quality, scholarship and community service opportunities to a diverse student body in order to complete the knowledge requirements set by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) so that graduates are competitive in the Dietetic Internship application process and eligible for a global marketplace meeting individual and family needs in the food or health-care industry.

Program Goal #1: Prepare graduates to perform competently in a dietetic internship or supervised practice program for preparation as an entry level dietitian.

  • Objective 1 50% of graduates from the DPD program will apply for acceptance into the dietetic internship within 12 months of graduation as required by ACEND.
  • Objective 2 30% of graduates from the DPD program will be admitted into the dietetic internship within 12 months of graduation as required by ACEND.
  • Objective 3 80% of graduates will pass the registration exam on the first-time pass rate.

Program Goal #2: Contribute to the number of graduates working in nutrition and food related careers in Texas and beyond its borders and will prepare graduates to demonstrate a commitment to community service.

  • Objective 1 50% of graduates will indicate with a “satisfactory” response or better that the DPD program prepared them for their supervised practice and career as an RD, other healthcare industry, food science, manufacturing or distribution employee.
  • Objective 2 40% of transfer students who complete the DPD program at Sam Houston State University will complete the program within 2½ years of their program admission; students entering as college freshmen will complete the program within four years.
  • Objective 3 50% of employers and DI directors will indicate on surveys “satisfactory” or better performance in the workplace, performance in the Dietetic Internship or in community service.
  • Objective 4 DPD program graduates who choose not to enter a dietetic internship will obtain a Verification Statement at the completion of the DPD coursework and have a GPA of at least 3.0.
