Shirin E. Edwin, Ph.D.

Shirin Edwin is an Associate Professor of French. Author of L’islam mis en relation: Le roman francophone de l’Afrique de l’Ouest (Kimé, 2009) and Privately Empowered: Expressing Feminism in Islam in Northern Nigerian Fiction (Northwestern University Press, 2016), she has published on Islam, gender and African literatures in Journal of African Cultural Studies, Gender, Place and Culture: A Journal of Feminist Geography, Frontiers: A Journal of Women’s Studies, Journal of Middle Eastern Women’s Studies, Gender and Education and Teaching the African Novel (MLA, Options for Teaching).

She teaches face-to-face and online courses on French language, literature and culture. Edwin organized and led a study abroad program to France in 2015 and taught French culture and civilization. She has worked with students to support undergraduate research (Undergraduate Research Symposium), and as mentor in the Freshmen Learning about Sam Houston Program (FLASH) and the Friends of International Students Program. She is currently exploring innovative forms of media to develop digital pedagogy in French. Edwin is also moderator and advisor of the French Club and the French Honor Society (Pi Delta Phi) on campus, and has organized a number of cultural events and initiatives on campus for the French Club since 2005.
