COCJ Academic Team

We are dedicated to delivering comprehensive academic support to students, faculty, and staff within the College of Criminal Justice. We serve as a central resource for addressing academic inquiries, offering guidance on university policies and procedures, and helping students navigate their academic journey.

Our team is committed to ensuring EVERY STUDENT has access to the tools, information, and support needed to thrive.

Course Overload Requests

  • Students are restricted to a maximum number of credit hours during a semester.
    • Fall & Spring: 19 hours
    • Summer: 14 hours

If a student would like to take more than the maximum number of hours they will need to submit an Overload Request Form.

Course Override Requests

When a course has certain restrictions that prevent students from registering, a student can request a Course Override to bypass the restriction. There a different types of Course Overrides depending on the restriction.

  • Classification Override = The course is restricted to a certain classification.
  • Capacity Override = Student is requesting to enroll in a course that has no seats left.
    • Considerations include: Current waitlist, student necessity of course, alternative options available, extenuating circumstance,
    • NOT taken into consideration: Preference of specific professors, schedule preference
  • Pre-requisite Override = The course requires a pre-requisite course in order to enroll.

Please make other arrangements for course registration as Course Override Request approval is not guaranteed.

Walk Only Requests

A Walk-Only Request form may be submitted by a student who has not yet completed all degree requirements but would like to participate in the commencement ceremony.

This request allows students to take part in the ceremony prior to the official conferral of their degree. However:

  • Only extenuating circumstances will be considered.
    • Extenuating circumstances may include a death or terminal illness in the immediate family, military service obligations, or relocation
  • All requests are subject to approval by the academic dean.

Please note, if the request is approved, participation in the commencement ceremony does not signify completion or conferral of degree - the degree will be conferred in the semester in which all requirements are met. A new graduation application and fee must be submitted for the term in which degree completion is expected. Extenuating circumstances may include a death or terminal illness in the immediate family, military service obligations, relocation, etc.

Academic Probation and Suspension

The CJ Academic Team is committed to supporting Criminal Justice students who are on academic probation or suspension. We are available to answer questions, offer guidance, and help students connect with campus resources. If a student is not sure who to talk to or where to begin, they are always welcome to reach out to a member of the CJ Academic Team for assistance.

  • An undergraduate student who falls below the minimum 2.0 SHSU overall grade point average at the close of any term will be placed on probation.
    • Students on probation are required to meet with an academic advisor in order to remain registered in the subsequent term.
  • Students whose SHSU overall grade point average falls below a 2.0 GPA in the term following the probation standing will be suspended academically.
  • Academically suspended students are required to be approved for readmission by the academic dean of the college to which the student will enroll at the time of their readmission.

To begin the process, please complete the intent to return form. Students interested in requesting Reinstatement from Suspension will need to complete an intent to return form.

For more information and detailed instructions about how to request reinstatement from suspension please visit our reinstatement from suspension guide.

Students who are receiving financial aid might be affected by a change in Academic Standing. Students who have been placed on Academic Probation and/or Academic Suspension may receive an email with information regarding SAP Appeals. This email will have the next steps that are needed in order to file a Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) Appeal. For more information please read here about SAP or reach out to the Cashier's Office.
