By Dr. James D. Long and Dr. Andrew A. Dewees
Posted June, 2009

The Biology Program at Sam Houston State University dates to 1884 with official listing of Mr. I. R. Dean as “Natural Science Instructor”. This finding was reported by Dr. James D. Long in the first of his five articles on the history biology at this institution, published in the annual Biology Department Newsletter from 1990-1994.  Dr. Long was affiliated with the Biology Program from 1946 until 1999 as student, graduate, professor and Department Director. Upon his retirement, he was named as Professor Emeritus. His thoughtful and informative articles on the history of Biology at Sam Houston are presented below. Also included is an update on Biology Department history (with more articles to follow) by Dr. Andrew A. Dewees, who was a member of the Biology faculty from 1967 to 2004, serving 16 years as Department Chair.

Dr. James D. Long passed away on March 2, 2009 (see Obituary here).

Dr. Dewees is retired and living in Huntsville. (A. A. Dewees, June, 2009)
