SHSU Theatre

The Theatre programs at Sam Houston State University are geared toward creating top-notch theatre professionals. Wether a student is interested in working in the commercial world of acting, directing, design, musical theatre or in educational theatre, our program prepares students for the job market after graduation. In a world of increasing tuition and college expenses, prospective students will find the quality of education at our department exceptionally attractive.

Theatre majors are involved in a field of study which encompasses acting, directing, technical theatre, costume, lighting, and set design, stage makeup, stage management, theatre history and dramatic theory and criticism. Musical Theatre, Acting and Directing, Design and Technical Theatre, or Secondary Education.

Students are eligible to be cast in the main season shows every semester as well as to be given leadership responsibilities in design, stage management, directing and technical theatre. As students progress in their primary area of interest they may be chosen to design, stage manage, or direct a production. This allows each student to develop a strong resume before graduation.

Guest directors and designers, as well as the theatre program's involvement with the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival, Texas Educational Theatre Association, and Broadway Theatre Project, allows our students considerable exposure to the professional world of theatre. Our proximity to Houston provides ongoing participation to the world of theatre, dance, musical theatre and opera.
