Profile of Dr. Sheryl Murphy-Manley

Dr. Sheryl Murphy-Manley

Sheryl K. Murphy-Manley earned a Bachelor of Music Education and Masters of Music in Conducting from SHSU. She earned her Ph. D. in musicology from the University of Texas at Austin where she taught in the undergraduate music department for four years and in the Continuing Education Program for eight years. She is a contributor to the newest edition of the New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians , edited by Stanley Sadie, and has written three articles ("Alessandro Scarlatti," "Giovanni Battista Pergolesi," and "Johann Adolf Hasse"), for Readers Guide to Music: History, Theory, and Criticism , edited by Murray Steib, 1999. Dr. Murphy-Manley's research in eighteenth century music, with her dissertation, "The Sacred Music of Gian Francesco de Majo (1732-1770)," has offered music historians editions of mid eighteenth-century sacred vocal music that have previously been available only in manuscript. Her research has contributed to the understanding of the lesser-known composers' influences on the classical style, as exemplified in the music of Haydn and Mozart. Her interests in musicology are broad including aspects from all periods of music. In the Fall of 2004, she published a book with Thomson Custom Publishing entitled, A Concise and Friendly Guide to Music History.
