Profile of Brian Herrington

Composer Brian Herrington joined Sam Houston State University in 2004. He studied composition at the Royal Academy of Music with Simon Bainbridge from 2001-2004, and is currently completing his Ph.D. dissertation. He received his Master of Music Degree in Composition from the University of Louisville (2000) where he studied with Marc Satterwhite and Steve Rouse.

His music has received the Royal Philharmonic Society Composition Prize, the First Music Award, two Royal Academy of Music composition prizes, the Morton Gould Young Composer Award, and two ASCAP PLUS Awards. In 2006, Mr. Herrington received ASCAP's highest young composer award, the Leo Kaplan Award.

Mr. Herrington has been commissioned by the Royal Philharmonic Society, the Royal Academy Symphony Orchestra, the Manson Ensemble, the Royal Festival Hall Organ Recital Series, and the New York Youth Symphony. In 2005, his music was broadcast on BBC Radio 3. This summer, his music was chosen for performance at the Summer Courses for New Music in Darmstadt, Germany.

The New York Sun described his music as “...an intriguing blend of common-man expression and formal acuity.” The London Times wrote, “Three works were given their first performances [by the London Sinfonietta]. By far the most individual was Brian Herrington's Symphonia, which put aural memories of the composer's Texas childhood through the mincer.”
