Deborah Dunham has toured internationally as a chamber music artist since 1981 and has maintained a double bass teaching studio since 1991. Her principal teachers have included Dennis Trembly (Los Angeles Philharmonic), Orin O'Brien (New York Philharmonic), Stuart Sankey (University of Michigan), and John J. Brown (Seattle Symphony). She is currently working with Paul Ellison at Rice University's Shepherd School of Music where she is enrolled in a Doctorate of Musical Arts program. While completing doctoral studies, she continues to serve as principal bass of Boston Baroque, Mercury Baroque Ensemble and the newly formed River Oaks Chamber Orchestra. She recently also worked with the Houston Symphony, Houston Ballet Orchestra, Houston Chamber Orchestra and San Antonio Symphony.
Deborah has performed at many music festivals including Aspen, Kent/Blossom, Tanglewood, Grand Tetons, Mainly Mozart, Vermont Musica Viva, Ernen, Switzerland's Festival der Zukunft (Festival of the Future) and Hong Kong's contemporary music festival, Musicarama . During the 2006 Summer Season she performed at the Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival in Florida, with Colorado's Central City Opera under the direction of Early Music Specialist Nicholas Kraemer, for the Bay Chamber Players in Rockport, Maine and at the Peninsula Music Festival in Door County, Wisconsin, under the direction of Victor Yampolsky.
Since 2001, Deborah has recorded annually for Telarc Records as a member of Boston Baroque and her past collaborations with other artists such as Jan DeGaetani (Eastman Chamber Players) and John Duykers (Seattle New Performance Group) and composers such as Bernard Rands (Boston Modern Orchestra Project) and John Harbison (Cantata Singers Ensemble) can be found on Arsis, Bridge, Mode, New Albion and New World Records. Deborah was a member of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra from 1987-1997 and worked with the Boston Symphony, Boston Pops and Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestras as an extra player from 1996-2001.
She was Artistic Director of the Society for Chamber Music in Rochester from 1995-2000 and served as President for the St. Cecilia Friends of Music Board of Directors from 2003-2005. She is currently president of the Houston Chapter of the Viola da Gamba Society of America.
