Profile of Dr. Rodney Cannon
Dr. Rodney Cannon has been a faculty member since 1982. He received his Bachelors and Masters degrees from Sam Houston State, and his Doctorate in Music Education from the University of North Texas.
A skilled percussionist and active as a recitalist, jazz and chamber musician, Prof. Cannon works extensively as a commercial musician, performing with many leading jazz artists in the greater Houston area.
He was selected as the 1992 Texas All-State Junior College Jazz Ensemble clinician. Under his direction, the SHSU Jazz Ensemble was selected to perform at the Texas Music Educator's Association Annual Convention in San Antonio in February 2001. He has extensive public school band experience.
Dr. Cannon served as chair of the School of Music from August 2002 to May 2006, after serving as acting chair from July 1995 to August 1998. He has taught percussion and directed the Jazz Band, along with other classroom duties. Despite his retirement from full- time faculty, Dr. Cannon will continue to serve in the School of Music by teaching Percussion Methods.
