The Counseling Program at Sam Houston State University offers a Master of Education and a Master of Arts in Counseling. The Master of Education Degree is designed for individuals pursuing professional school counselor certification. With 100% pass rate on the Texas Examination of Educator Standards, graduates in the school counseling tract are well prepared to be successful in a school counseling position. The degree is a 48 semester hour program which may meet the academic requirements for licensure as a profession counselor in Texas. The Master of Arts offers specializations in licensed professional counselor and licensed marriage and family therapist. Both specializations are 48 semester hour programs and are designed to help students meet academic requirements according to the Texas Sate Board of Examiners. Graduates of the Master of Arts degree may apply for LPC Intern or for an associate license for a marriage and family therapist in the State of Texas. LPC and LMFT may work in private practice, hospitals, agencies, work as consultants, work in Human Resources and other employee assistance programs.
