COLLEGE LEVEL EXAMINATION PROGRAM (CLEP)

(Sam Houston State University Policy Information - Revised 03/06/2008)

Sam Houston State University is an open national testing center for the College Level Examination Program (CLEP). SHSU accepts many of the CLEP Subject Exams for credit, but we do not accept the General Exams for credit (except in transfer from another college or university). All CLEP exams may be taken at SHSU, but only the CLEP Subject Exams listed below may be accepted for credit at SHSU according to this policy.

Sam Houston State University has a policy of accepting up to a maximum of thirty (30) hours of credit through a combination of national standardized examinations and/or locally designed and administered departmental tests. More than thirty (30) hours of credit by examination will be considered on an individual appeal basis. Policies are subject to change at any time. Please check this web site for the most current policy.

TEST DAYS AND TIMES, AND REGISTRATION: The CLEP exams are administered Monday thru Friday at either 8:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m., or 2:00 p.m. Examinees need to report to the testing site at least 15-30 minutes prior to their scheduled testing time on their scheduled testing date. Appointments for taking a test may be made by contacting the Testing Center (see QUESTIONS section at the bottom of this page). The registration form must be completed and returned with the registration fee and the test fee before an appointment for testing can be established.

2. REGISTRATION/ADMINISTRATION FEE: A non-transferable, non-refundable registration/administration fee is charged at the rate of $30.00 for each test the examinee is registering for. This fee is separate from the test fee and may be paid by check or money order made payable to "SHSU" or by credit card (MasterCard or Visa). Information to be included on the face of the check or money order are are the examinee's drivers license and/or social security number. If a change in a testing appointment is requested, another registration/administration fee is required along with written information concerning the new testing date and time.
3.

TEST FEE:The current charge for taking a CLEP test is $65.00 per test (will increase to $70 per test beginning July 1, 2008). A student may pay by check or money order made payable to CLEP, or by credit card (Visa, Mastercard). This fee is also due at the time of registration for a CLEP exam and is separate from the registration/administration fee.

4. ITEMS NEEDED: Examinees need to bring a current picture identification plus a second form of ID (i.e. social security card, student ID, etc.) on the day of the test. Examinees will not be allowed to begin testing without proper identification and testing will not be delayed waiting for proper identification to be presented.
5.

LATE EXAMINEES AND FAMILY/FRIENDS: Examinees arriving for a test after the test session has begun will not be allowed to begin testing. If they wish to reschedule their missed appointment they must pay the registration/administration fee again. Family or friends coming to the Center with an examinee may not wait for them in the Testing Center. Adults will be told an approximate time to return in order to pick-up the examinee. If children are brought to the Center and expected to wait for an examinee while they test the examinee will be refused their testing opportunity for that day. If they wish to reschedule their testing appointment they will be required to pay the registration/administration fee again.

6.

ACCEPTABLE SCORES AND CREDIT: Acceptable scores for CLEP exams are determined by the American Council on Education's "ACE Score" which appears on the score report.  (The only exception affecting the recommended score is with the English exams which require an essay before credit may be considered.  The English Department will make a final decision about awarding credit based on a combination of the scores from the computer portion of the test and the essay portion of the test.)  Also, students receiving credit for taking a foreign language exam must contact the Foreign Languages Department before being allowed to enroll in any future foreign language courses.  The Foreign Languages Department requires a student to take a departmental exam before continuing to take courses in their department.  Credit will not be awarded for an exam if the student is currently taking the course, has already taken the course, or has received credit for the course already. (The exception to this part of the policy will be with those students who have chosen to participate in the Academic Fresh Start Program.  These students will be allowed to take exams in areas they have previously taken that fall under the Academic Fresh Start guidelines.) Credit for CLEP exams will be accepted in transfer from another college/university once we have received an official transcript showing the credit awarded (but only if the credit awarded at the previous college/university is transferable to SHSU) or by receiving an official DSST Score Report. Specific course prefixes, numbers, and credit hours will be awarded for acceptable scores, but no grades will be awarded, except in transfer from another college or university. There is a charge for additional score reports. To order a score report or receive additional information:
