Welcome to the Sam Houston Memorial Museum Web Site!

I am pleased to welcome all of the visitors who will be viewing this information on our Museum web site. All of us here at the Sam Houston Memorial Museum are very proud of our museum complex and its many attractions. As you browse through this information, I hope that you will not only learn more about that remarkable man, Sam Houston, but you will also decide to come pay us a visit in Huntsville, Texas!

It may seem strange that such a traditional institution as a museum is now on the internet, but actually, we are part of a proud tradition. Sam Houston was always a man ahead of his time and if computers had been available to him, I know he would have taken advantage of them. When Houston first entered the U.S. Senate in 1846 it took him six weeks to travel from Texas to Washington, D.C. By the time he left Washington for good in 1859 the travel time had been cut down to six days! The railroad and the telegraph created a quantum leap in the speed of communication and travel. Houston understood that and he would understand the advantages of our new means of communication today.

Again, welcome to our museum. I hope you enjoy your visit.
