Welcome Week 2007
As the new semester approaches, so does one of our most highly anticipated events… Welcome Week 2007! This year’s theme “Welcome to Planet Sam” is sure to be one of success.
Our office has planned over 25 events to welcome you to SHSU! We have a wide variety of activities where just about every student can find an event to spark their interest. During our annual New Student Move In program, we’ve coordinated over 150 volunteers to assist students with moving into the residence halls! We’re having a pool party during Ravenfest, a free night of karaoke and games at the Kat’s Meow, dinner and a free screening of the movie Spiderman 3 dinner and even a few organization fairs as well as leadership programs! Also, feel free to join us for a guaranteed night of free fun at our annual Casino Night!
We have many programs lined up for your enjoyment, and look forward to meeting you at those programs!
Bearkat Alley
Bearkat Alley is Sam Houston State University’s official tail gate area during football season. For every home game (and for specific away games) the Department on Student Activities hosts a variety of organizations and departments who “camp” out in a designated area at the North side of Bowers Stadium. These groups cook an assortment of foods, which in return is free for all those who attend Bearkat Alley. Also different giveaways are distributed through out the season, ranging from t-shirts to spirited towels in order to boost Sam Houston Pride.
This fall along with being at all home games, Student Activities will organize two chartered bus trips to away games including Stephen F. Austin State University on October 27th and Texas State University on November 17th. Please look for more information on our website as these dates approach!
Homecoming 2007
Homecoming 2007 will be a week like none other! Join us for “A Night on the Orange Carpet” all week long! We’ll open on Monday with our traditional Homecoming Kick- Off Rally where you’ll get the unique opportunity to meet your 2007-2008 Homecoming King and Queen Candidates. On Wednesday night we’ll sponsor a FREE carnival called Sam Jam, so make sure you join us because they’ll be plenty of free games, rides, food and prizes. We’ll close out an already fantastic week with a parade on Thursday, and the football game on Saturday. Two hours before Saturday’s kickoff time we’ll start our tailgate party and you’ll see us again on the field during halftime as we crown our new Homecoming King and Queen for the 07-08 academic year. Of course the afore mentioned events are only highlights, so be sure to contact our office to find out what else is going on!
Firefest 2007
Firefest gears students up for the football game against rivals, the SFA Lumberjacks. This event includes a bonfire, peprally, and various other activities.
Tree of Light
The annual Tree of Light ceremony has taken place for the past 86 years at SHSU and is Sam Houston’s oldest and most cherished tradition. Each year, students, faculty, staff and the surrounding community come together to celebrate a time of giving. The ceremony began as an annual Christmas Tree lighting and has evolved into a campus-wide celebration during the holiday season.
During the ceremony, several different University groups perform including the SHSU Choral and the Orange Pride Dance Team. Student organizations are also invited to decorate the tree with an ornament. Hot wassail and cookies are always served and a canned-food drive is organized to donate back to the community.
