The Department of Recreational Sports
The Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum is a multipurpose facility located on the campus
of Sam Houston State University. Many University departments,
student groups, local high schools, community organizations
and national promotional companies share the Coliseum.
It is a cornerstone of activity for the University,
Huntsville, and surrounding communities.
The Coliseum is home to SHSU Volleyball, Men's Basketball, and Ladykat Basketball. The Coliseum was completed in 1976 and was originally called the University Coliseum. The name was later changed to the Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum, in honor of long time Board of Regents member, Bernard G. Johnson of Houston.
The Johnson Coliseum is branching out and looking at all types of entertainment, trade shows, seminars and special events. The Coliseum can promote, co-promote, or lease at an excellent rate. Contact the Coliseum directly for availability and rental rates.
The Coliseum hosts a variety of recreational sports activities, University calendar events including graduation, concerts, campus organization events ,summer camps, family shows and special events. The building hosts approximately 80 events each year, covering 250 days.
Maximum bulding capacity is 6,919. This includes 5,529 fixed seats, 825 floor seats, and 565 telescopic bleachers.
