The Department of Recreational Sports
Each year the Department of Recreational Sports offers students an opportunity to get involved within the Recreational Sports Program Areas by becoming a part of the staff. Opportunities for employment include positions as Intramural Sports Supervisors, Officials, and Scorekeepers,Aquatics Lifeguards, Coliseum Event Staff, HKC Facility Staff and various other positions.

Facility and Open Recreation
HKC Student Staff:
Student employees will work together to oversee the day-to day operations of the HKC. All employees are cross-trained in each area, including weight room supervision, gymnasium supervision, front door identification and security, and equipment checkout. Each employee is also expected to actively engage in positive customer service with HKC patrons, and be ready to answer questions about the facility and other Recreational Sports programs. There are opportunities for advancement to Building Supervisor for outstanding staff members.
Lifeguards:
Student lifeguards will work together to over see the day to day operations of the pool. Lifeguards must have current American Red Cross Lifeguard Training and CPR for the Professional Rescuer. The pool is a heated pool with lap lanes and a leisure area for recreation, intramural, and exercise programs.
Supervisor:
Intramural Sports Supervisors need to have strong communication skills, a positive attitude, and have had previous experience with the Intramural program and officiating. Supervisors must also have current First Aid and CPR certifications. Supervisors are responsible for understanding and being able to implement all Intramural policies and procedures. Supervisors assist in managing Intramural Sports activities, participants, and officials on-site. Other responsibilities include evaluating officials and assisting with all Intramural Sports official clinics.
Officials:
Intramural Sports Officials are responsible for maintaining a safe and pleasant playing environment for all participants by enforcing the established rules and regulations for each particular sport. To become part of the Intramural Sports officiating program, simply attend the training clinics held for the sport in which you are interested in prior to the season. Information regarding clinic dates is available at the Recreational Sports Office.
Game Managers:
Game Managers are responsible for maintaining an accurate record of the game by checking participants into the game, working the scoreboard during the game, and recording information on team score sheets. Game Managers will also provide basic first aid, resolve any conflicts that arise and assist in setting up and taking down the fields. To become a Game Managers, you are required to have officiated at least one Intramural Sport.
Outdoor RecreationEquipment Repair:
An Equipment Repair worker should be able to demonstrate advanced skills in the area of maintenance and repair of outdoor recreation equipment. An example is a mountain bike mechanic. Other items that make up our inventory and may need repair are canoes, kayaks, and tents.
Equipment Rental:
An Equipment Rental worker should be able to effectively serve customers. A basic knowledge of camping gear is desired. Duties include cleaning gear, loading canoes on racks, and performing monetary transactions. Many Equipment Rental workers also have served as Trip Leaders, and the ability to do both is preferred.
Trip Leader:
A Trip Leader should be able to insure the safety of participants, while maximizing their enjoyment of Outdoor Recreation trips. Demonstrated skill in climbing, biking, backpacking, and canoeing are desired. Certifications are preferred, especially in the area of first aid. A Trip Leader should also possess a good driving record and be able to assist in the transportation of participants to their destination.
Recreational Sports OfficeGraphics Artist
Responsibilities of the Graphics Artist are: develop flyer, poster, brochures and other marketing pieces to advertise and promote the Rec Sports Department and other various program areas. Assist in maintaining the SHSU Rec Sport website. Work closely with the Graduate Assistant and the Assistant Directors in the design elements of publicity for each area. Develop new ideas and implement them for the bulletin boards and keep bulletin boards updated with current information throughout campus. Assist with promoting Special Events and management of events if needed. Maintain a database of all promotional materials, sorted by program areas. Other duties as assigned.
Office Assistant:
The Office Assistant is responsible for all daily financial transactions; i.e. guest passes, facility rental fees, and forfeit fees. They are responsible for the front desk, which includes answering the phones, waiting on customers, and making sure the front office is running smoothly. They are also responsible for preparing mail outs for the Department. They serve as the front line person for the Department.
ColiseumEvent/Operations Staff:
Each Coliseum employee much be hard working and dedicated to goals of the Coliseum. All employees must be customer service oriented, and able to work as an integral part of a team. While at work, each staff member reflects he management of the Coliseum. It is imperative for all user groups to have an enjoyable experience when using the Coliseum and every employee plays a pivotal role in this experience. Employees must be willing to work irregular and/or long hours. All Coliseum employees will be required to do manual labor such as: setting up and breaking down staging equipment, chairs, tables and other heavy equipment.
Staff work responsibilities and duties include: vacuuming and emptying trash in the offices and in the locker rooms replacing each with a new trash bag, scrubbing showers, sinks and urinals, cleaning mirrors, sweeping and mopping floors and restocking the locker rooms. The staff is also responsible for cleaning and preparing the concession stands during events, including inventory, clean the arena seats after each event, this includes picking up trash, sweeping and mopping. Staff members may also be assign to specific duties during events such as, ticket taker, ticket seller, concession stand worker and security.
