Sam Houston State University , founded in 1879, will celebrate
the 125 th Anniversary of the official opening of the institution
October, 2004. Named after a legendary figure in U.S. history,
the university is one of the oldest public institutions of higher
learning in Texas .
Sam Houston State University has been a great benefit and remarkable
value to the state of Texas because of its educational impact on
young people. The university's heritage and history, and its evolution
and accomplishments over 125 years, are a source of great pride
for its past and present faculty, staff and alumni.
The story revolves around the history of the university and its
namesake; the sacrifices that were made to keep the school going
during the early years; its success, and most importantly, its
role in educating Texas youth. It is the story of the past and
present educators, staff and students who have made Sam Houston
State University what it is today.
This 30-minute documentary-style and informational video program
will tell the story of the founding and proud history of Sam Houston
State University and the important role it has played in higher
education in Texas over its 125-year existence. This in-depth look
at the school will feature a combination of on-camera interviews,
historical footage, archive photos, new video footage of campus
scenes, and visuals of students in a learning environment.
Houston Public Television (KUHT-TV Channel 8) has already endorsed
the project and will premier the documentary beginning the week
of October 10, 2004 . From there the program will be offered to
other PBS stations throughout Texas . The program will then be
submitted to PBS for national distribution, and to other appropriate
national broadcast outlets.
