Senior Adults Tutor
First Grade Struggling Readers

The Forum, a senior residence in The Woodlands, Texas has allowed us to recruit and train senior adults to tutor first grader struggling readers at Sally K. Ride Elementary School. In August and September 2002, the seniors participated in workshops learning beginning reading methods and strategies. Since October, each Tuesday and Thursday, senior adults (Senior Readers) are transported to the elementary school where they are each matched with a six- year old who reads below grade level. After each 30-minute tutoring session, the seniors continue their training with the Site Coordinator, sharing ideas, discussing techniques, and learning new methods. The informal feedback from teachers show that the program is making a dramatic difference in the children’s reading levels.
