Schedule

The meeting will begin on Friday, September 26. Speakers will include Francis Edward Su of Harvey Mudd College, David Kung of St. Mary's College of Maryland, and Lloyd Douglas of the University of Nevada - Reno.

Lloyd Douglas will present “Proposal Writing and Funding Opportunities in the Mathematical Sciences at the National Science Foundation."  Participants will learn about writing proposals to the National Science Foundation including how to incorporate students as well as some common proposal writing pitfalls.  Specific NSF programs that may be of particular interest to the participants will be discussed, however the participants will be able to discuss any issue regarding NSF, NSF funding or any myths that they may have heard about NSF, in an informal setting.
David Kung will present "Moving from `Learning to Teach' to `Teaching to Learn'." Teaching college mathematics involves a fair amount of learning on the job. Without the years of preparation that high school teachers go through, we are forced to pick things up on the fly, learning to teach while we're teahing. In this workshop we'll explore how you can do that more effectively, struturing your interactions with students in ways that will help you build on your knowledge of student thinking. Doing so transforms your classroom into a place where you are "teaching to learn," teaching in ways that help you learn to teach. Francis Su will present "Designing Undergraduate Research Projects." Undergraduate reearch seems to be popular these days, but how do you do it? Why do research with undergraduates? What makes a good project? Where do you find problems? Francis will give his perspective on these questions and there will be a discussion.
