SURVEY OF USE OF INTERACTIVE ELECTRONIC WHITEBOARD
RESPONSES TO OPEN-ENDED QUESTIONS

The two questions presented on this page were designed to provide information about any problems users have with the board or any drawbacks to its use.

QUESTION:  Describe any problems or drawbacks regarding use of the board.

RESPONSES:  Seventeen of thirty respondents offered opinions, with the following being representative responses.  The first two responses reflect the opinions of some users that their training in board use was inadequate.

"The initial training for the instructors on how to capture, save and print images from the board was not well done and the documentation that came with the board for reference was not as helpful or complete as it should have been."

"On two occasions, I have had the board stop working. It took quite a while for me to figure out that I needed to unplug the board and restart the computer."

********

Several responses suggested logistical problems:

"I just wish I had a rear-projection board.  Often it seems that I am in the way when presenting.  However, I use a wireless mouse and keyboard to help with this problem."

" I don't like the shadows when standing in front of the projector.  Perhaps a rear projection system would be a better choice."

********

The cost of the equipment and necessity to share with other users were mentioned by several respondents:

"We only have one unit and it is only used by our Instructional Service Dept so access is a problem."

"Expense of the equipment and the problems of alignment with the projection screen appears to be sensitive."

" We are a small school and must share resources - moving the board and getting set up for classes is time consuming and distracting."

"The expense; must have adequate space."

********
Two additional comments were offered, one reflecting a software problem and one indicting a lack of problems.

"When using the board interactively as a projection surface, to demonstrate software applications you can not use the board as a marker board without switching out of the application you are demonstrating."

"Had none. It worked out of the box, and was a dream to use and train people on."

QUESTION:  Describe the things you like least about the use of the board in teaching.

RESPONSES:  As with the previous question, concerns centered around logistical problems, the cost of equipment, and adequacy of training

"Having to turn off the lights in the classroom, but I guess that that is the fault of our projector."

". Wish the image was larger. Hard to see, but that is related to the size of our white board. We need a taller board!"

"...set up time and having to share it with other teachers."

"Set up. We do not have enough classroom space and cannot wall-mount our boards. Thus we end up carting the board and "smart cart" to each room. If I teach a one-hour class, a 10 minute set-up seems excessive."
