The Eta Iota Chapter of the National French Honor Society, Pi Delta Phi, held its annual initiation ceremony on Wednesday, April 30. Pi Delta Phi is one of the oldest National Academic Honor Societies in the U.S. with 330 chapters in the U.S. and two related chapters in France. Pi Delta Phi was established in 1906 at the University of California, Berkeley to recognize outstanding scholarship in French, to increase the knowledge and appreciation of French speaking cultures around the world and to stimulate and promote French speaking cultural activities and the study of Francophone cultures. To be inducted as a regular member, students must have taken at least 18 hours of French and maintain an overall GPA of 3.0, with a “B” average in French.
On Wednesday, seven students and three SHSU faculty and friends were initiated to Pi Delta Phi. Among the regular members were SHSU students, Patrick Bashor, Carey Chartier, Tamera Claunch, Erica Hill, Jessica Holland, Ashton Mouton and Ashlyn Remmert. Two SHSU faculty of Foreign Languages, Dr. Madalina Akli, Assistant Professor of French and Dr. Enrique Mallen, Professor of Spanish, were inducted as honorary members and Mr. Richard Edwards, sponsor of the Seola Arnaud and R.V. Edwards endowed Scholarship in French, was also initiated as an honorary member.
The ceremony was conducted by Eta Iota student president Heather Liner and secretary Jennah Burleson, both minors in French. The event was well attended by local members of the society, family and friends of the initiates and by SHSU faculty of Foreign Languages, Drs. Debra Andrist, Shirin Edwin, Mary Gutermuth, Frieda Koeninger, Kay Raymond and Rafael Saumell-Munoz.
