RIGHTS & RESPONSIBILITIES REGARDING STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES

   
   The University and Students with Disabilities have certain rights and responsibilities related to receiving, providing, and determining reasonable accommodations, the purpose of which is to provide students with disabilities equal access to educational and student support services offered by the University. )

Students with Disabilities have the following rights :

•  Access to courses, programs, services, activities, and facilities offered through the University.

•  Receive reasonable accommodations, academic adjustments, and/or auxiliary aids and services 6as supported by documentation.

•  Confidentiality of all information about their disability except as disclosures are required or permitted by law.

•  Full and equal participation in the services and activities of the University.

•  Information in an accessible format.

 

Students with Disabilities have the following responsibilities :

•  Meet the minimum qualifications and maintain essential institutional standards for courses, programs, services, jobs, and activities.

•  Self identify as an individual with a disability when an accommodation is needed and to seek information, counsel, and assistance as necessary.

•  Provide the office of Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD) with documentation from an appropriate professional that describes how the disability limits participation in courses, programs, services, job(s), and activities and supports reasonable accommodations.

•  Follow procedures for obtaining reasonable accommodations, academic adjustments, and/or auxiliary aids and services.

•  Request specific accommodations in a timely fashion (e.g., ensure that the professor is aware of the accommodations prior to each exam or request alternative text or sign language interpreters in sufficient time so these services can be arranged).

•  At the beginning of each semester, obtain and complete Classroom Accommodation Request Forms at the SSD office and contact professors to discuss accommodation needs.

•  Attend class regularly.

•  Inform SSD in a timely manner of any problems that arise.

•  As a student, you are ultimately responsible for your own success.

 

Sam Houston State University has the following rights :

•  Identify and establish essential functions, abilities, skills, knowledge and standards for courses, programs, services, jobs, and activities or facilities and to evaluate students on this basis.

•  Determine the appropriate standards in developing, constructing, remodeling, and maintaining facilities to assure access.

•  Confirm disability status, if appropriate or warranted, and request and receive current, relevant documentation (from appropriate professional) that supports requests for accommodations, academic adjustments, and/or auxiliary aids and services.

•  Have appropriate staff discuss students and their disabilities in order to implement requested accommodations.

•  Deny a request for accommodations, academic adjustments, or auxiliary aids and services and/or barrier removal in facilities if the documentation does not demonstrate that the request is warranted, or if the individual fails to provide appropriate documentation.

•  Identify and establish appropriate accommodations for courses, programs, services, activities, and facilities. Select among equally effective accommodations, academic adjustments, and/or auxiliary aids and services. Decline unreasonable accommodations, academic adjustments or auxiliary aids and services, and/or facility-related barrier removal requests that impose a fundamental alteration of a program or activity of the University.

•  Ensure that courses, programs, services, jobs, activities and facilities, when viewed in their entirety, are available and usable in the most integrated and appropriate settings.

•  Respond to requests on a timely basis.

 

Sam Houston State University has the following responsibilities :

•  Evaluate students on the basis of their abilities and not their disabilities.

•  Maintain admission and academic standards.

•  Provide or arrange reasonable accommodations, academic adjustments, and/or auxiliary aids and services to students with disabilities upon request with appropriate documentation.

•  Refrain from retaliation against individuals seeking and/or advocating for accessibility.

•  Prohibit unlawful discrimination against qualified students with disabilities.

•  Comply with legal requirements for access.

•  Prohibit retaliation against individuals who seek and/or advocate for accessibility.

•  Provide information to faculty, staff, students, and guests with disabilities in accessible formats upon request.

•  Provide or arrange reasonable accommodations, academic adjustments and/or auxiliary aids and services for students with disabilities in courses, programs, services, jobs, activities, and facilities.

•  Maintain appropriate confidentiality of records and communication except where permitted or required by law.
